FICTION: Cadets is
free!
FACT:
CADETS IS NOT FREE.
There isn’t a registration fee.
There isn’t a fee for uniforms. There isn’t a fee for sports,
biathlon, leaders, flying, gliding, summer camps, meals, survival
camping, effective speaking, transportation, etc., for all regular
training experiences.
So, it sure sounds like it’s free, BUT…
Cadets rely on fundraising
instead of registration fees,
and surcharges for uniform, sports, flying, etc.
It
costs the Squadron about $60,000 annually to ensure the Cadet
program includes a variety of activities during the training year
(September to June).
YOUR CHILD RECEIVES SO MANY BENEFITS FROM CADETS. YOUR ASSISTANCE
AND SUPPORT IS NEEDED TO ENSURE THEY RECEIVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO
EXPERIENCE THE MANY DIVERSE EXPERIENCES CADETS CAN OFFER.
FICTION: The Military
pays for all Cadet activities!
FACT:
The military covers only a small portion of the local costs.
The military does NOT pay for
the majority of the local accommodation and administration costs.
The military does NOT pay for
the costs associated with supplementary training activities and
equipment during the training year.
The military does NOT pay for the Air Cadet League
assessments that cover the gliding and other provincially supported
activities.
The amount provided by the military would only cover one gliding
experience and one weekend training camp for the entire year.
The military does pay for cadet uniforms, training staff, and the
majority of costs associated with summer courses.
FICTION: A Cadet does
not need parent involvement.
FACT:
Your child needs to know you are just as interested in their Cadet
experience as you are in all other aspects of their lives.
As
in all areas of a child’s life, a parent’s interest is crucial to
their continued interest and success. With Cadets, often times the
best way a parent can support their child is by listening to their
experiences and ensuring they have as many diverse and interesting
experiences as possible.
FICTION:
Other people enjoy fundraising so they can raise the money the Cadets need.
FACT:
If you are not fundraising, then exactly who is supporting your Cadet?
Everybody is busy with work, family, children, other activities,
etc, but it is reasonable to request that EACH FAMILY ASSIST WITH
FUNDRAISING FOR CADETS IN SOME WAY. The Friends of 533 are able to
assist by providing financial support for babysitting, and
transportation.
FICTION: Fundraising
means bingos.
FACT:
Yes. And no.
The Friends of 533 receive most of their funding from working bingos
and casinos. This amount equals approximately $30,000 each year from
Bingos, which has been our annual financial obligation to the
Squadron.
Additional fundraising has been done, such as a Christmas and a
spring fundraiser. These raise significantly less money, but are
very valuable as this is money that does not have restrictions
attached to it, as bingo/casino funds do.
The Lion’s Sponsoring Society also finds fundraising opportunities
for the Cadets, which raise money in a variety of ways (i.e. provide
volunteer for the Trade Fair, deliver business directories).
Cadet involvement in these activities is limited, however, as the
emphasis of the cadet program is on training, not fundraising.
FICTION: I would need to work 10 bingos each year and
I don’t have time for that.
FACT:
We ask each family to work only 3 to 4 bingos, each year.
We
are given 10 bingos each year. Each family is asked to only
work 3 (or 4) bingos, dependent on the number of Cadets within the
Squadron. This is regardless of the number of children in the family
who attend Cadets.
Financial support for babysitters and transportation can easily be
arranged if needed.
If
we do not get enough volunteers, we are at risk of being fined
and/or forfeiting bingos, resulting in decreased funds for the
Squadron.
FICTION: I can’t work bingos because of…allergies,
time, personal beliefs, medical reasons, etc.
FACT: Actually, the above is true. Some
people are unable to work bingos for a variety of reasons.
Good
news: Bingo halls are now smoke-free!
The other reasons are understood and
respected – but they do not put people on the floor to work bingos
and provide the funds needed for our Cadets to engage in worthwhile
experiences and activities.
Many parents have asked if they can “pay” instead of working bingos.
Our response is if a family is absolutely unable to work any bingos,
but they still wish to provide financial support, then we will
gratefully accept their contribution. These contributions will
be used towards donations to other organizations that work our
bingos. Your financial contribution helps ensure we are not fined
and lose a bingo or that we need to cancel bingos.
In
order to meet the donation needs of our outside volunteers, we are
suggesting a contribution of $50 for each bingo a family cannot
work.
